How to care for your handknitted jewellery

Cleaning handknitted jewellery requires a gentle touch to maintain its beauty and integrity over time. To clean your handknitted jewellery please don’t use a polishing cloth as this might snag the stitches.

Pour the silver dip into a container big enough to hold and cover large pieces like this Winter bangle

Step 1: Dipping: Instead, use a liquid silver dip solution such as Goddards, and immerse the piece(s) for no more than 15 seconds in the first instance; it can work very quickly! Once your jewellery is lovely and shiny again, rinse it thoroughly before drying and wearing.

Step 2: Rinse in clean tap water to remove any chemical residue

Step 3: Drying your jewellery is really important as any moisture is going to cause the precious metal to tarnish again. It is best to dry your jewellery by either using a hairdryer or by laying it on some paper towel and placing it on a radiator until it is completely dry. Under no circumstances place it near a naked flame or it will melt!

Gold-plated, handknitted jewellery should not tarnish. However if your piece comprises un-plated silver which does become tarnished, minimal exposure to the chemicals should not damage it. Contact me if you have any queries.

Good luck!

Gold vermeil jewellery shouldn't tarnish so only dip the unplated (bare silver) sections as necessary. Remember to rinse and dry them afterwards though!
