something old, something new....say 'I do' to repurposing

Updated: Sep 8

When it comes to choosing the perfect wedding or engagement ring, many couples immediately envision a trip to the jewellers' to pick out something brand new. But have you ever considered repurposing a family heirloom to create a one-of-a-kind ring?

Why repurposing heirloom jewellery makes sense

Sentimental value A wedding ring is much more than just a piece of jewellery; it’s a powerful symbol of love, commitment, and the journey couples are about to embark on. For many, the idea of using an heirloom piece—whether it’s an old ring, a pendant, or even a brooch—makes the occasion even more meaningful.

Sustainability In a world where sustainability is becoming more and more important, repurposing heirloom jewellery is a great way to minimize your environmental impact. By reusing materials that already have intrinsic value, you’re reducing the demand for newly mined metals and stones. It’s a small but significant way to contribute to a more sustainable future while honouring the past.

Cost-Effectiveness Let’s be honest: wedding rings can be expensive. When you repurpose a family heirloom, you’re often working with precious metals and gemstones that are already valuable. This can make repurposing a more affordable option compared to purchasing something brand new—without sacrificing the quality or beauty of the piece. Plus, you’re creating something that’s completely unique to you, rather than a ring that hundreds of other couples might have.

Steps to repurpose your jewellery

If you’re considering repurposing an heirloom piece, here’s how we can work together to make it happen:

  1. Start with a conversation I always recommend sitting down for a consultation to talk about your vision. Whether you already have a piece in mind or need help selecting one, I’ll guide you through the process and discuss the possibilities. We’ll talk about the materials, the design, and how we can incorporate your style into the final piece.

  2. Assess the jewellery’s condition It’s important to take a close look at the condition of the heirloom piece. Some older jewellery may need some repairs or restructuring but don’t worry—if the piece is showing signs of wear, I’ll work with you to restore it and ensure that it’s strong enough for daily wear.

  3. Create a design together Once we’ve assessed the piece and talked through your ideas, I’ll create a design that incorporates your vision and the essence of the original heirloom.

  4. Consider the timeline and budget Repurposing jewellery can take a bit more time than buying something off the shelf, so we’ll discuss a timeline that works for you. We’ll also work within your budget to ensure that the final piece meets your expectations without going over your limits.

Success stories: Real couples who repurposed heirlooms

I’ve had the privilege of working with couples who’ve transformed their family heirlooms into stunning wedding and engagement bands. In the example (above left) I was able to create a wedding ring which fitted perfectly alongside the heirloom engagement ring by using computer aided designs (CAD) and 3D scanning. By using CAD as a design tool and aid, I was able to show another couple how their heirloom diamond would look, set as the bride requested, in a delicate ring band with claws (above right)
